Lady Death

Luna and Mars dance together in the
late October, one red on the vast
canvas of sky, the other blue,
or maybe just sad.
Nobody decorated for Halloween this year
and when I pulled for the day,
I drew Death triplicated on the cloth.
She’s usually so singular,
but adamant in her assertion that
past, present, and future must all
begin anew.  Everything we knew,
now nevermore, and though we
may traipse through black and
orange, in and out of shadow,
we will not pass through here again.
The night and the moon and mars are
even more transitory than life itself.
